So Ladies (and you, too, guys), Valentine’s day is quickly approaching. We think it’s about time that you purchase some new duds for yourself. It’s a day that some women love and some loathe because they think that they “need to be with someone” to celebrate. We say go out and have a blast anyway! So whether you are planning a night with a special someone or just going out with the gals, make it a fun evening and do it up in style. Dress in luxuriously smooth and pretty lingerie and treat yourself to a fabulous glass of wine, good company and to-die-for food. Maybe even show a little bit of your secret side, whatever it may be.

New Years Eve is one of my favorite nights of the year. Yes, it’s often overdone and expensive, but it’s filled with hope and dreams and ideas of new things to come (and kisses)! And amidst all of this dreaming and fun, just after the clock strikes midnight, bands and juke boxes everywhere sound out a song we typically only hear once a year – Old Lang Syne. I always look forward to that. It actually tops the list of my favorite songs – definitely in the top 5. And last night as I sat there singing – no, actually humming – I realized I had no idea what the words are and why we sing it only once a year. So I decided to do a little invesitgating.

As it turns out, Auld Lang Syne is a Scottish poem thought to be composed by Scottish poet and lyricist Robert Burns in 1788 and literally translates to “Old Long Since,” and more roughly it means “long, long ago” or “days gone by.” I could go into the whole history, but after my research I found that just knowing that little bit and what the lyrics actually are is enough for me. So here is the English-translated version of the Auld Lang Syne lyrics:

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and old lang syne ?

CHORUS:

For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
And surely you’ll buy your pint cup !
and surely I’ll buy mine !
And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We two have run about the slopes,
and picked the daisies fine ;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
since auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine† ;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

CHORUS

And there’s a hand my trusty friend !
And give us a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.

I think it’s a perfect song to be played as we pass out of an old year and float into a new one. Because although it’s an awesome feeling to welcome a new year with an open mind and fresh dreams, it is equally mixed with saying goodbye to experiences, and sometimes people, from the prior year. So it’s a little bit sad, to say goodbye, but in order to move on we have to leave some things behind. So goodbye 2009 and hello 2010, I’m ready for you.

Okay, so maybe the hullabaloo of Hanukkah may be over, but we still have the New Year to look forward to. Thank goodness! For life is a lot more fun when you have things to excite you, things you are eagerly anticipating. And for me, New Year’s happens to be one of them.

When thinking of the New Year, inevitably one thinks of change and what will come in the year ahead. The idea of change is wonderful, for we gravitate towards changes that are positive and life enhancing. What will I do in the New Year? Where will I be? What changes do I want to make? We ask ourselves all kinds of questions and let ourselves dream! And what a beautiful thing it is to dream! So get out there and start dreaming, it’ll be well worth the time, we promise.

Although I am a Minnesotan, I can’t say that I am a fan of the snow and winters. However, having said that, I love it this holiday time of year. I’ve lived in warm places such as Miami and Austin, Texas, (whoo hoo!) but growing up in the Midwest, it doesn’t seem like holiday season unless the ground is covered in white. Somehow, this time of year, donning a sweater, winter coat, boots, scarf and mittens seems okay. Yes, it’s a little cold as I quickly de-layer in the Mall of America parking lot so as not to have to carry all that around while shopping, but none-the-less it’s doable. When I look around and I see lights, hear singing and feel the overall cheer of the holidays, that somehow warms me up. No, I take it back, it’s the hot toddy warming me up. But still, winter these few weeks isn’t bad (unless you’re my sister trapped by an East Coast snow storm and wanting to come home). And on top of it all (or dare I say underneath it all) I’m wearing a pair of comfortable, yet sexy, underwear that remind me how to feel attractive amidst layers of thermal, wool and down. Cheers for now.
